there are a few methods to displaying html code with php, the echo and print functions are good examples.
i personally use the echo function more often.

<?php //you start by defining that this is php code for you server to process
echo"hello world"; //outputs hello world
//now lets play around a bit
echo"<br /> oi"; // we are outputing HTML, remember that this is not a textfile, you need to manually add lines.
$greeting = "bonjour"; // we have defined the variable $greeting as bonjour
echo $greeting; // this outputs the value of $greeting, which is bonjour.
$greeting2="oi";
$greeting3="hello";
echo"$greeting1, $greeting2, and $greeting are all different ways of greeting someone";
//this echo command outputs: bonjour, oi, and hello are all different ways of greeting someone
