Essay on the book Brave New World

Brave New World's Adversities
Story Analysis
by cody wasser

Aldous Huxley's Brave New World story is full of what may seem as crazy ideas, it reflects on our own society in consideration to the newly developing personalities put at an extreme in a futuristic time; during the coarse of the book, many different characters have various adversary moments, which are pushed aside by using "soma" and/or "taking it like a man." Bernard, an alpha-plus struggles through out the entire story with his various friends, and aquatints. Helmholtz is extremely interested in the past lifestyles, when they used to be "savages," Lenina is an ordinary simple teenager who has a fetish for people that are different, and Bernard is plain old weird according to the current standards in the stories society.

Helmholtz is the first person introduced into the story that seemed remotely strange. There were many rumors about how he had various books in his safe, including the "bible," which was quite true. Helmholtz was one or possibly the only historian interested in his society who was interested in the stories written, because it had become forbidden, waste time reading "silly books". After all of the discouragement provided through peer pressure, he still kept doing what he wanted, no matter what anyone said, he stuck with it. John was his unexpected savour, a "Savage" to most, but he solved Helmholtz problem of not having someone to share his lust for the ancient literature such as, " Romeo and Juliet" by "Shakespeare." Helmholtz problem was solved, by see how he was quite excited about how john also loved and understood it.

Lenina was the idol, many people envied her, because of her great looks and how she was easily able to get every guy after her; in today's world she would have been known as a slut. The cultural difference in the book is showing what would happen if people continued to support the usage of drugs and having a prostitute daily. Her main issue was that she had never felt or known love before, which was what Bernard and John wanted; they did not want only sex, they wanted to bond. With the help of "soma" she was able to realize what it was; when she could not stop thinking about john, even after she had "done it" with "a dozen guys" and taken a large amount of "soma." Society introduced long relationships as a bad thing, Bernard introduced the theory of love, and John Provided the opportunity for her to experience it.

People used to say bernard had "alcohol in his blood surrogate" to explain why he had been so strange according to their standards. Soma was Bernard's attempt at fitting in with the crowd, and many people agreed that it would be a great solution. They would always say things such as "take some soma," or "A gramme in time saves nine." The society in the book thought that the ultimate cure for anything was "soma," which seemed to be an addictive, fast acting, anti-depresent drug. Bernard's first attempt did not provide great result, but he kept on trying, and eventually it just happened. Bernard's Savour was John, he was the son of Linda and the DHC who resigned as soon as John entered the society. Bernard's act of bringing "The Savage" into to their domain, was a press magnet; everyone wanted to see, touch, and talk to him, which brought Bernard a great deal of attention, because he became his manager. Bernard's fame brought him what he always wanted, to get laid seven days a week, but it cause problems between John; he pushed him too much, with the help of Lenina dumping him.

Bernard found his savour who brought much chaos and hope into the world. John became Helmholtz friend, Lenina's lover, and Bernard's ticket to fame. He gave up his life for others close to him for the hope of getting something better in return.
